Overview

In 2020, when I was asked to create an app for Rhino Nation, I was honoured to be working with one of the most recognisable and fastest growing bodybuilding platforms out there. Their brand was already strong and bold, but they were missing a mobile app, and nowadays, for a digital hub like theirs, it is nothing but a missed opportunity. I started working on it immediately as the digital product, UI and UX designer.

Objective

Starting from their website, which is their hub for managing the services they provide their subscribers, I started outlining some staple ideas that must have been in the app, too. I wanted to give their community everything they already had on their site (videos, articles, logbooks, forums, trainings) in an improved and stylish way, plus some new cool features. It took me roughly 4 weeks to complete the whole design process.

Process

Process Step 1: Brainstorming & Product Set Up

Although the platform I was about to start designing had to offer certain features their already existing website offered, I still had to research more about this gym / bodybuilding world in order to make sure not to make any mistakes. After the research and testing of similar platforms, I started brainstorming with mind maps and sketches, until I finally created some wireframe mockups to start visualizing the product.

Process Step 2: Layout & Style Search

After having solidified the ideas for the structure and features the app had to offer, I moved to the second step of the product design process: assembling everything in a elegant and functional way and look for a style that had to be vibrant and consistent with their brand. I tried different ideas, first going a bit further away from their existing style, to then come back to the yellow/black pairing once I settled on some traits.

Process Step 3: Production

Once the basic layout of a few app screens were completed and my clients greenlit the direction the platform was taking, I started the third and last step of this design process: the production phase. In this section I've collected some examples of how I consistently crafted all the assets needed by the programmers to actually start coding and make this app alive!
