Overview

This was a very fun and quick project to work on back in early 2019. It took two months from start to finish and my role was to take care of all things regarding the user interface and experience while also outlining the main identity of what this game had to be. The competition in this sector was huge, but together with our team we split the tasks perfectly, allowing us to complete on time while creating something unique.

Objective

Every store on any mobile platform is flooded with word puzzle games. That's why we wanted to create an alternative which was still generating fun from the same matrix (finding words on a board) but in a different way and with new mechanics. Hence, we came up with the concept of limited time to find a minimum number of words, the bombs helping you as a bonus and the endless progression concept.

Process

Process Step 1: Brainstorming & Product Set Up

Wordblast was a challenge from the very beginning, because we needed to compete with some huge names, creating something unique, but at the same time trying to keep it a recognizable word puzzle game at its core. This phase was surely the most important, and we realised that although it lasted longer than it usually does, it made us saved time in the long run.

Process Step 2: Layout & Style Search

This step was the most fun, looking for inspiration and examples for a game like this one, being bubbly, vibrant, fun and colourful at its core, is always daring and exciting. Surprisingly it took less than expected for the whole team to greenlit what I was creating in the first stages of this process step. We settled on a style that was screaming bubbles and explosive fun, making it clear to our audience from the screenshots.

Process Step 3: Production

Coming from the second step of this process sure that we had found a great style and a strong identity for this project, I started the production step quite early. All assets needed to be consistent and coherent with the traits we outlined. The tricky part was to make it all work for six different themes available in the game for the player to choose from. Changing the theme had an impact on the menu and settings look, too.
